Heritage School Talent Show 2010

The Heritage School Talent Show was held on Friday, May 21, 2010 at the Serrano High School Performing Arts Center. The second graders wore Dalmatian hoods and red collars made by Debi's mom. They danced to "Who Let the Dogs Out?/101 Dalmatians March/Dog Rap". Here are Mrs. Whiting's Second Graders marching onto the stage to the song "101 Dalmatians".

Right in the middle of their dance, who should show up but
Cruella deVil!

(Mrs. Whiting as Cruella deVil, and the second graders as Dalmatians.)

The Cruella deVil costume was made by Debi's mom.

Debi's niece, Kyleigh, wearing a Dalmatian hood made by Kyleigh's Grandma Doris. Cruella deVil is trying to wrap up the "Kyleigh Dalmatian" in her red cape.

Debi's sister, Lisa; Lisa's daughter, Kyleigh; and Debi's parents (Richard and Doris Greenwood) and Gary attended the Talent Show. Debi's mom made all the Dalmatian hoods and collars, as well as the Cruella costume. We all had a fun time!

Insulation is Installed!

The insulation arrived about 8:00 a.m. this morning.

Insulation in the walls of the living room, also known as the "piano room".

Insulation in the ceiling of the great room. The solar tubes really put out a lot of light!

Insulation in the ceiling of the entryway, looking toward the guest bathroom.

There are just a few finishing touches that need to be done, but the insulation will be completed tomorrow! Gary has even called for the inspector to come tomorrow and "sign off" the insulation step.

Next step...tongue and groove in the ceiling of the great room, master bedroom, and entryway
. Then, concrete board needs to be put up anywhere the river rock and slate will be installed. After that, drywall can go up. We also have to pour concrete outside each door for a stoop, and have asphalt installed where the road meets our driveway--a new county ordinance that we just found out about. We need to hurry and get in because the county keeps changing the rules and adding new things for us to do! However, we can see the "light at the end of the tunnel"! We just might make our August 15th deadline to move in!

Landscaping: Rock Wall and Ground Cover

This is our latest attempt at landscaping. Gary was able to get some free rocks from some friends in Pinon Hills. The Kayser boys, along with some other young men from church, used their muscles and built this "retaining" wall. During the past two weeks, George Kayser has been planting rosemary and periwinkle on the hillside. We chose rosemary because rabbits won't eat it, and we chose periwinkle because it spreads quickly as a ground cover and is good at erosion control. The picture above is of the side of the yard that faces north.

The picture above is of the side that faces west--the area we call the "backyard". We are still searching the local nursery to find plants that will do well on a west-facing slope that is mainly shaded by a tree--and is resistant to rabbits! Any ideas?

We Passed Our Combo Inspection!

On Thursday, May 13th, 2010, our log cabin passed its "combo" inspection. This is the big inspection for the rough electrical and rough plumbing. This photo was taken before Gary completed the "fine tuning" for the electrical panel, but since I can't seem to upload any photos from our new camera, I had to use this old picture of the electrical panel.

On Tuesday (May 18th) we will begin the process of installing the insulation. Then it will be drywall and the tongue and groove. Our goal is to have the final inspection by August 15th, 2010. (We chose that date because we acquired our building permit on August 15th, 2008, and our goal was to be in the log cabin within two years.)

Wish us luck!
