Baking Center Drawers (Open)
Gary has been hard at work completing the "finishing touches" in the kitchen. He was reluctant to build cabinets, but after reading a couple of books on cabinet-making, he decided to give it a try. If you have ever priced kitchen cabinets you know that by having Gary do it, we are saving thousands of dollars!
Debi has always dreamed of a kitchen that has pull-out drawers rather than bottom cabinets with stationary shelves. It will be so much easier to access bowls, dishes, pots, and pans by just pulling out a drawer. The outside of the drawers will be painted in our accent color--dark green--but the insides will remain stained to match the logs in our cabin.

Baking Center Drawers (Closed)
The drawers aren't finished yet. Gary will be "facing" the front of the drawers, painting them green, and adding handles. We debated whether to have the kitchen cabinets be stained or painted, and we decided that there is already so much wood showing in the great room (where the kitchen is located) that we wanted to paint the cabinets green. When we found the marble for the top of the baking center, we knew that painting the cabinets green was the right choice.

Top Cabinet of Baking Center
The top cabinet over the baking center will hold all the staples such as flour, sugar, salt, and anything associated with baking. The cabinet doors aren't finished yet, but I couldn't wait to show the progress of the kitchen.
Rain Forest Green Marble
When we were looking for granite for the top of the kitchen island and the baking center, we found this marble called "Rain Forest Green". We fell in love with it! But, our dreams were crushed when we learned that marble is not designed for kitchen use because acids (such as lemon juice, tomato juice, grapefruit, and so on) can damage marble. We decided that we could "get away with" installing marble in the baking center area because acids will not be used in that area. We've decided to make the kitchen island from butcher block--which will look great in a log cabin.
The Baking Center
This is how the baking center looks right now. The "Rain Forest Green" marble has not been installed yet. The marble will cover the top of the baking center, and there will be a back-splash about four inches high all around the edges. When the marble is completed, and the drawers have been "faced" and painted--and the cabinet doors are installed--I will update this blog!

ReplyDeleteWow, your baking area looks great! I opted for drawers in my kitchen here in Utah instead of doors and roll out shelves and I love them. I would suggest keeping your backsplash as high as possible as it is much easier to clean and maintain than a painted surface. Your home is beautiful. Happy Thanksgiving!!!
